80’s New Orleans crime comedy directed by Jim Jarmusch and starring Tom Waits, John Lurie and Roberto Benigni and now presented by Criterion on Blu-ray.
In Down By Law, DJ Zack and pimp Jack end up in prison for being too laid-back to avoid being framed for crimes they didn’t commit.
They end up sharing a cell with eccentric Italian optimist Roberto, whose limited command of the English language is both entertaining and infuriating -but rather more useful to them is the fact that Roberto knows an escape route.

In this late 80’s New Orleans movie starring Paul Newman, Blaze tells the story of the latter years of Earl Long, a flamboyant governor of Louisiana. The aging Earl falls in love with young stripper Blaze Starr. When they move in together, Earl’s opponents use this to attack his political program, which included civil rights for blacks in the 1950’s.

Avenging Force Starring Michael Dudikoff

Avenging Force – 1986
In this rare 1980’s new orleans action movie, Former Military Intelligence man Matt Hunter (Michael Dudikoff) goes to visit Larry Richards, a friend who’s running for the  Senate. He learns that Larry’s been receiving death threats from a group calling themselves the Pentangle.
He learns that they’re a right wing paramilitary group and that Larry once foiled one of their plans which is why they’re targeting him.

Lucio Fulci’s The Beyond

Italian horror director Lucio Fulci came to New Orleans in 1980 to direct what many consider to be his masterpiece.
The Beyond is a very gory 1980’s New Orleans horror movie filled with bizarre murders, great slow moving zombies and a suffocating atmosphere of dread.
The cellar of an old hotel is built on top of the door to the beyond.  A young woman wants to open a restaurant in it. She is confronted with strange events; a lethal fall, vanishings and her friend breaking his neck is just the start of the nightmare…

Dennis Quaid Stars In The Big Easy

The Big Easy – 1987
Landmark 1980’s New Orleans noir suspense movie starring Dennis Quaid and Ellen Barkin.
Remy McSwain, a Homicide lieutenant finds that he has two problems, the first of a series of gang killings and Ann Osborne, a beautiful attorney from the D.A.’s police corruption task force in his office.
He begins a relationship with her as the killings continue only to have charges filed against him for accepting bribes as he stumbles on a police corruption Sting. While this is happening, the criminals insist that none of the crime gangs are behind the killings.
